What is a Classic Car?

What exactly makes one car a classic and another one not? We break it down for you so that you can assess whether your vehicle is a classic.

A Road to the Past

What is a Classic Car?Consider the Car’s Age

The age of the vehicle is a great indicator of whether it is classic or not. If it is old, then we’re giving you a thumbs up. The age of a “classic” car is typically 25-50 years old. If your car is 50 years or older, then you have an antique on your hands. Of course, the exact number of years varies by which expert you talk to. For example, some professionals only consider a car to be an antique if it is 100 years old or more.

Why It Matters if Your Car is a Classic

You might be asking yourself, does it matter if my car is a classic? Well, yes, it does, at least, when it comes to insuring the vehicle and meeting state-specific requirements. If you have a “classic” vehicle, then you can get special rates on your auto insurance. You might also be able to get a specialized loan before putting money down on that older car you’ve always wanted to own.

If you want historical license plates for the vehicle, then you better make sure you know your state’s detailed requirements. To be “historical,” in your state, your car must be a certain number of years old; every state has different rules so you’ll have to check in your location.

Why Classic Cars are Popular

The classic car is a timeless treasure. It is fine or unusual, has excellent engineering and workmanship, and unparalleled attention to detail. Plus, owning a classic car can be a lot of fun, from taking pride showing it to family and friends to showing it around in car shows or as part of a car club.
